Let’s take a look at the undercut. On a recent lazy afternoon on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy we looked around and saw no less than fourteen men with undercuts passing by within the half hour. Melbourne is filled with them – and it’s not hard to figure out why. There’s a variety of options when it comes to length and how pronounced undercuts are. They’re both a fashion statement and quite practical in hot weather.
But there’s this nagging feeling like we’ve seen this before…
Oh yeah! Maybe here?
Are you a fan of Cillian Murphy? Because we sure are. His roguish charms in Peaky Blinders definitely have us admiring his cheekbones and of course, his hair. He’s rocking an undercut across both sides and the back, with a C-Line cut rather than straight across, with the back falling on the crown of his head. This style is also a little longer in the front so it gets nice and messy when he’s making trouble around Birmingham, England (no spoilers). We’ve gone on a bit of a journey with him, watching his undercut go from extremely pronounced to much more subtle.
So here’s the question. Tom Hardy’s hair or Cillian Murphy’s? It’s quite a showdown. While Cillian’s got the undercut, Tom’s rocking the full head of hair with an exaggerated part and a highly respectable beard and moustache. We see a few of those around Melbourne as well, don’t we?
Our question is, why not both? Full facial hair plus a pronounced undercut is definitely a look that’s trending around here.
But hey, who says the fellas get to have all the fun? We’ve seen (and styled) a surge of women’s undercuts as well recently. Not only does it keep your head cooler in summer, but it looks awesome when you put your hair up. We’ve seen ladies rocking both subtle and intense undercuts, with a few variations including a back undercut and a side one.
And for those with short hair, it’s so suave. Check out Scarlett Johansson looking as fierce as ever with her undercut.
The undercuts in Peaky Blinders were pretty normal in the Edwardian 1920s and into the 1940s. They disappeared for a while, but we’re glad to see them coming back (and relieved they’re no longer a “curtain cut” but instead have the fringe shorter or swept back).
We’re not sure what exciting hair will be coming from Peaky Blinders Season Three – but we’ll be ready for it! Hair Hub by Falcone can do any kind of women and men’s haircut, including subtle undercuts, full undercuts, styling and more.
